Học tập trực tuyến ngày nay đã có sự phát triển đáng kế giúp cho người học có nhiều cơ hội học tập từ xa hơn. Công nghệ thông tin và truyền thông (ICT) đã đóng góp vào sự tiến hóa từ hình thức học tập trên lớp cho đến hình thức học tập từ xa, và hình thức học tập trực tuyến. Trong đó hình thức học tập trực tuyến được dự đoán có thể trở thành cách học tập chính trong tương lai. Do vậy bài báo này nhằm cung cấp cái nhìn tổng quan lịch sử của môi trường học tập trực tuyến cả trên thế giới và Việt Nam, để từ đó làm cơ sở lý luận cho việc thiết kế các hệ thống học tập trực tuyến sau này.
